Art retreat on the Isle of Skye
With its beautiful mountain scenery, sea, geology and plethora of wildlife, the Isle of Skye is a truly picturesque island just off the west coast of Scotland. It is home to red deer, Scottish wildcats, pine martens and mountain hares, not to mention seabirds, seals and otters. Dolphins, sea and golden eagles are also regularly spotted.
The largest of the Inner Hebrides, Skye’s landscape is both moody and dramatic, with its distinctive highland characteristic and towering jagged peaks such as The Black Cuillin, which challenges the bravest of hillwalkers. Swimmers and walkers are attracted to the Faerie Pools of Glenbrittle, for their beautiful clear waters and breathtaking surroundings.
In terms of natural inspiration, Skye has it all, especially for the aspiring artist who will find it hard to do anything but try and capture the tremendous beauty, drama and ever-changing light of this extraordinary part of the world. Artist or not, when one leaves Skye, they do so uplifted, energised and refreshed.
This was an excellent painting holiday, fired by Julia’s boundless enthusiasm for her subject and her ability as a tutor to encourage and bring out the best in each individual. The various nearby locations couldn’t fail to inspire. Everyone, including non-painting partners, was made to feel so welcome. The course was well-structured and progressive, beginning with exercises to heighten awareness of the importance of tone. We were gradually introduced to new mediums and ideas, and these were put into practice en plein air at well-chosen spots, with some of the best scenery on Skye. Julia had arranged gallery visits and meetings with other professional artists, which included a memorable pastels demonstration on a nearby beach. Each day ended with a concluding session to review the day’s objectives and consider each individual’s work, before relaxing over aperitifs and a wonderful meal.
