Julia Christie

I initially trained as an Illustrator at Manchester Polytechnic from 1980 to 1984. I obtained a first class honours degree and began my career as a professional Illustrator. I was commissioned to work on numerous projects including Alice in Wonderland by Octopus Books, Beauty and the Beast by Frederick Warne and The Saga of Ethelred Flametail by Lilliput Lane.

In 1985 I moved to Gloucestershire to work at the Prema Project in Uley as an artist in residence. It is here that I began my teaching career. I worked with a variety of community groups and local prisions. Since then I have been running weekly painting and drawing classes in Stroud where I now reside and am the Art Tutor at The Nelson Trust, a drug rehabilitation centre.

I have exhibited at various galleries in Gloucestershire and organised two major award winning exhibitions on the theme of trees, 'Branching Out', at The Museum in the Park - Stroud. My students produced a large composite painting measuring 17ft x 6ft, made up of 42 individual canvases to create a large panoramic view of Stratford Park. This piece is now on permanent display at the Leisure Centre in Stroud. I regularly organise exhibitions to show case my students work. I also exhibited another collective piece along with some of my tree paintings at Westonbirt Arboretum. I exhibit annually at the Gallery An Talla Dearg Isle Ornsay, Isle of Skye. I am now hosting a selection of painting breaks on The Isle of Skye where I now live. See my download here for further details.

I love the natural world, especially trees, and I try to capture the essence and beauty of nature with paint. I particularly enjoy exploring the use of colour and love to experiment and take risks with it's application.
